All whale-lovers know that the San Diego coast is the perfect place for watching gray whales during their annual migration. Considered one of the ultimate spectacles of nature, gray whale migration is simply breathtaking. The San Diego coastline is one of their points along their migratory route from the cold Artic waters to the warmer, more favorable waters of the Baja, California. This is also where the female gray whales give birth to their babies.

An estimated 26,000 gray whales annually journey to and fro from the Artic region to the Baja, covering long distances of more than 10,000 miles. Taking this in to account it can easily be said that the gray whale travels the greatest amount as compared to any other mammal.

Whale watching is as spectacular for the experienced whale-watcher as it is for a first-timer. Catching sight of a gray whale is an unrivalled experience; as everyone stops to admire these gigantic mammals that are nothing short of awesome.

The Birch Aquarium, located in San Diego is the best place to get all the information you are looking for on gray whales and their migratory patterns. Gray whales are most often seen from the months of December right through to March. Gray whales usually travel together in dozens as they migrate, though it is not uncommon to see them in twos or threes - called pods. These whales are relatively slow swimmers and can be easily spotted all along the San Diego coastline.

While swimming, gray whales often dive to depths of more than 100 feet for a few minutes before surfacing and blowing water through their blowhole. After this they will undertake a few dives that are shallow before diving deep again. Trying to figure out each whale’s pattern of diving and blowing makes whale watching even more exciting.

While there are numerous places from where whale watching can be done, there is no comparison to the excitement of whale watching when aboard a cruise. There are plenty of cruises to choose from in San Diego and most of them offer irresistible offers. From the Birch Aquarium to H&M Landing, cruises are considered the best way to observe the tranquility and beauty of migrating gray whales.

Many other points along the San Diego coastline, including the Torry Pines State Beach cliffs and the Cabrillo National Monument situated on Point Loma act are perfect for observing the magnificence of the gray whales as they continue on their journey of migration.

Whether you choose to watch the whales from the coast or a cruise, either ways it remains a truly memorable San Diego experience. Whale watching is an exciting experience for the whole family and all you need to do is make a plan with family and friends and then sit back and enjoy the awesome sight of the magnificent gray whales as they swim around. Watching a gray whale come up and blow water through its blowhole is sure to be an experience you would cherish forever and make you come back for more.

Sponge Coral Jewelry: A Gentle Wind from the warming Seas

Corals per se constitute of contrasting species in the spineless phylum Coelenterata. They are radially even and possess inner space for digestion, called gastrovascular cavity, whose alone opening is surrounded by tentacles to assist in food seizure. They are mostly known by their hard skeletons, a calcium carbonate crystallized framework released by the epidermis of coral organisms named anthozoans. Coral colonies or sedimentations mature to become reefs. They flourish in loving seas. The genus Corallium presents off a red-orange, sometimes pinkish or white secretion that could be employed in creating ornaments and jewelry. Since the 1700s, sponge coral was principally harvested from the coral reefs of Italy. It is precisely of late that most of the provision derives from the Japan and the islands in the South Pacific.

Lizard Island is a Great Barrier Reef Hotel and is the most northerly island on the Reef, and it would be a great choice for a beach vacation or a tropical honeymoon vacation resort.

Lizard is located right on the spectacular Great Barrier Reef, with its colourful coral reefs and 24 powder white sand beaches. This really is a taste of paradise, and the ideal tropical honeymoon vacation resort, especially as the island does not cater for children.

It has forty rooms, either on the main beach or on a small headland, plus the main building, pool, gym, spa, and watersports centre.

Each of the 40 villas on Voyages Lizard Island is elegant and spacious, with either ocean or beach views, and your choices whilst limited by the depth of your pocket because Lizard Island isn’t cheap anyway!!

If however this is your choice of tropical honeymoon vacation resort, then splash out and book The Pavilion!!

The Pavilion is high on the point of Sunset Ridge overlooking the Coral Sea, and is totally private yet a wonderful 270 degree panoramic view of Anchor Bay, Oscar Island and Sunset Beach.

It has a huge veranda with the usual sunloungers and a private plunge pool, and just the most stunning views.

A really nice touch is a private path leading to another private and very secluded area where table and chairs are placed to eat out on whilst enjoying the cooling breeze and the view.

Internally the Pavilion is luxurious, with even a laptop computer, though quite why I’m not sure, you really want to get away from that sort of thing.

The other choices of accommodation are as follows.

The Sunset Point Villas are set high on Sunset Ridge with views over Anchor Bay or Sunset Beach , though the view is interfered with by eucalyptus trees. The villas are very private with a veranda, with chairs and a hammock. It’s easy to get to a number of beaches from here, and the villas as you would expect are well furnished.

The Anchor Bay suites are set along the arc of Anchor Bay, and not far from the main lodge. They have lovely sea views and a direct pathway onto the beach. They have an open plan design and a large veranda with a daybed.

Lastly the Anchor Bay rooms have a garden setting, and are relatively small inside, but there are family rooms here

Our experience was that the Sunset Point Villas were very comfortable, and as our booking was full board all we had to pay for was our alcohol as soft drinks were complimentary at dinner and at the beach club..

There is no doubt that the reef and the snorkelling are just terrific, and right off the beach too!! You can ask to be taken to any beach you like with a picnic, and collected when you want., and you can go on organised snorkelling trips. The colours of the fish are simply incredible around lovely coral gardens

Other activities include Gamefishing, or you can just go exploring, or sailing, or just relax at the luxurious Azure Spa and try some pampering.

Food is a hugely important part of any vacation especially on a honeymoon and Lizard Island will not disappoint.

Dining at Osprey’s restaurant is a huge pleasure, and in case you are concerned the menu changes every day, is fresh, and very creative using local produce and of course the freshest seafood. The Thursday buffet is out of this world.

You can opt for a private dinner on the beach.

There is a good range of choices at breakfast and you can opt for a lunchtime picnic option delivered to the beach house.

The staff are young, friendly and efficient, and very difficult to find fault with.

Whilst Lizard Island may be expensive, and the large lizards wandering around a little off putting at first, it is worth every cent.

It must be close to being the top Great Barrier Reef hotel, and I would certainly recommend it as a great tropical honeymoon vacation resort
